Why Food Is Spoiling

Food spoilage usually comes from one of four causes:

1. The item is outside the storage type it requires.
2. The refrigerator, freezer, or Cold Storage lost power or function.
3. The displayed label or expiration days are wrong in an older build.
4. The item was already close to expiration before storage.

Check the item detail, not only the backpack-slot number.

Fridge and Freezer

The Requires Fridge reminder identifies items that need refrigeration. The Deep Freezing ability changes effective preservation, and current builds should display the active value rather than the base multiplier.

v1.0.14911 fixed:

• missing Requires Fridge reminders;
• food outside freezers incorrectly labeled Freezer after Proper Storage;
• refrigerator freshness bonuses reverting after outages, restoration, or manual switching;
• backpack expiration days disagreeing with item details.

If a guide or screenshot predates this patch, its display behavior may not match your game.

Cold Storage

At the Warehouse Manager Home, storage Furniture inside Cold Storage receives freezing effects. Moving a cabinet in or out should apply the change immediately. Later fixes addressed refrigeration units becoming inactive after reload and contamination persisting in unopened storage.

Cold Storage is not a reason to ignore power or contamination. Recheck the room after loading or exploration and clean affected storage when the game allows it.

Power-Outage Checklist

1. Restore critical refrigeration before optional loads.
2. Verify generator auto-start, fuel, and batteries.
3. Reopen the refrigerator or storage interface.
4. Compare the item's slot display with its detail panel.
5. Separate questionable or contaminated food from clean reserves.
6. Use soon-expiring food first after confirming it is safe in-game.
